Originally months ago I had hoped to spend two months in the arctic. Gradually it was cut back to six weeks, then 4 weeks and just a couple of days ago to 3 weeks. Things are changing rapidly in the arctic. All the available housing has been taken up by construction workers. They are expanding the seaport and the airport. Churchill is a major export port for grain to Russia from Canada. And since the ice is melting, it's a lot shorter to ship things across the arctic ocean to Russia than go around any other way. Also the oil companies are positioning themselves to drill up in the arctic which though a disaster for the polar bears and other marine life, it makes big bucks for Shell Oil and the likes. So to make the story short and sweet, PBI is only bringing up people this year for the time that they spend on the Tundra Buggy. PBI is thinking of purchasing their own housing for staff starting next year if the situation continues. This information was relayed to me through PBI. I will find out much more once I am up there and will keep you up to date.
I am the newbie on my team. The rest of the team has years of field experience so I'm sure I will benefit from all of their accumulated knowledge! And yes, I will do my best to keep my wits about me and be safe. Aw - but I really want to give one of those bears a big hug - just kidding! :)
